All das bleibt erhalten in ‚Unstrument’.

The sound of an orchestra is always experienced in the concert hall at the moment it is made. The physical presence of a musician and conductor are the prerequisites for this. But the musician does not play the instrument, he plays the strings stretched over it, the airy interior, the skin, the metal…the vibrations thus caused are taken up by wood, brass, other metal and instrumentally empty resonance chamber and only enlarged. The musician stimulates this sound, the instrument takes it up, enlarges it and sends it out into the space of the performance.
All this is kept in ‘Unstrument’. Only the playing musician is no longer present. The orchestra remains, the seating arrangements and placing o the instruments in the orchestra stay the same. The music is made and played in the concert hall. The music is now stimulated by a transducer. The composition does not exist as a score with notes. Conductor, musician and composer come together in one moment of performance and in one person: the composer Johannes S. Sistermanns, who controls the orchestral performance with a live sound direction from his laptop in the concert hall.

The composition was made digitally and goes from his computer to the instrument via a few interfaces. One WaVer transfers the vibrations onto the material surface of each orchestral instrument. This makes it resound according to its material
and resonance chamber and then gives off the sound into the concert hall. All the sounds of the composition ‘Unstrument’ come from the instruments and not from any loudspeakers in the concert hall.

The multi-voiced composition ‘Unstrument’ makes numerous instruments from all groups of the orchestra give off their sound. Both individual instruments and whole groups of instruments and space movements by the orchestra are to be heard.
